General Site Guide Information:
Below is some introductory information to our flying sites with links to the individual Site Guides. Our 3 sites in the Chewelah, WA area (Eagle, Parker and Inklers) are within 12 road miles of one another. Steptoe is to the S of Spokane. Each site has its own unique hurdles to jump before flying them in the way of landowner notifications, waivers, online registration, etc. Steptoe does not require a site introduction although you may request one from MASA. Studying the individual Site Guides is a must to learn about the unique features of each and therefore enhance the safety of your flying. As a MASA member you’ll have access to our online MASA Forum for detailed communications with other MASA members.
Inklers Point is a USHPA Insured Flying Site and requires current USHPA Membership and a Site Introduction by a MASA member. There is also a Landowner Waiver which must be signed. If you’ve signed one in the past you’ll need to sign a new one for 2026. Inklers will have as many as two locked gates on the access roads this year. Contact MASA for access information and MASA Calendar use protocols. See the MASA News web page for further information.
Parker’s gate combination was changed last fall. Please contact MASA for information. New pilots to Paker must have a Site Introduction from a MASA member. See the MASA News web page for further information.
“Lake Chewelah” is back and the Oman LZ is quite wet with standing water in most of it. These conditions usually exist into May and sometimes June.
Eagle Mountain is located within the Colville National Forest and a logging operation will be ongoing during 2026 which could restrict access to launch. See the MASA News web page for further information.
New pilots to Eagle must have a Site Introduction from a MASA member. You cannot see Eagle’s LZs from Eagle launch nor from the road as you are driving to launch. A visiting pilot must become familiar with the topography of Eagle’s surroundings and be able to locate the LZs once you are in the air. The LZs are flat but most of the nearby area which looks flat from the air is not. Get on Google Earth and study this area before asking for a Site Introduction.
Steptoe Butte is a Washington State Park and requires a Washington State Park “Discover Pass” for parking. You can purchase a Discover Pass at the Butte.
For pg and hg pilots you must also register each year to fly in a Washington State Park which allows pg and/or hg flying: Pilot Registration. Registration forms may be available at the top of the butte in the lower parking lot’s SE corner. Further flying information is posted at Steptoe Butte State Park.
Steptoe Butte rises up 1000’ above the surrounding area and is cone shaped. As such, air flow at the top of the butte can be switchy in direction (it will try to flow around the butte rather than up the sides). The best soaring sides are SW and E (they are the broader sides).
